WEEK 3 - Video Inspiration

The jagged, triangular forms of glaciers inspired my design for the studio. I particularly liked the crystallized look of the glaciers, which I emulated with glass. The glacier concept is a recurring motif in my design, particularly evident in the roof of the Christian Benner Custom studios and the jagged vitrines on the stairs from the showroom to the first floor.

SketchUp Model - The Two Workshops of Christian Benner Custom and Hazan Motorworks:

Studios 1 and 2 for Christian Benner Custom located on the first floor. The studios are separate and are connected by a bridge. Large glass panels allow workers to connect between studio spaces and to appreciate the surrounding exterior environment.

Studio for Hazan Motorworks located in the basement. All materials used for the studio are closely related to the ground and the materials of motorcycles (stone and metal).

Textures used in SketchUp model:

Word: SPLINTERY

Word: POWERFUL

Word: CROSS - GRANITE

Texture SPLINTERY used for the L'shaped pillars throughout the model. Specifically, it is used here in Hazan Motorwork's basement studio for the pillars.

Texture POWERFUL used for the arches which support Christian Benner Customs' two adjacent studios on the first floor and Hazan Motorwork's studio in the basement.

Texture CROSS-GRANITE used for the walls of Hazan Motorwork's studio.

WEEK 1 - First SketchUp Model and 18 Sections

Sketchup Model of 'REV + COWHIDE' :

SKETCH - Top: Rev || Bottom: Cowhide

SECTION

HIGH-ANGLED SHOT

As the concept is centered around an integration and strong link with the environment, material selection tends to lean towards glass, wood and stone; whereby the translucency of the glass is a gateway to the surrounding and the stone and wood is a direct link to the soil and vegetation in nature.

ARCH1101 - Task #1

Article 1: The Creative Piece

'Continuity and Space' (2014)
Janice Teng
Collection of Works: Sculpture and Ink Drawings
Originally inspired by skin diseases and phobias, particularly trypophobia, my HSC Visual Arts Body of Work is a culmination of experimentation with organic shapes, unusual materials, space and movement. I was particularly fascinated by people's aversion to crevice/crater-like skin and the repetition of circular imprints. However, I wanted to take their fear and alter their perspective to hopefully show them the beauty of undulating forms. Throughout the art-making process, my concept progressed into solely creating complex sculptures that conveyed movement and played with interesting shapes. Similarly, I articulated this notion in my ink drawings. To note, I was specifically influenced by Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Boccioni's Futurist sculpture, 'Unique Forms of Continuity and Space' (1913), in which I paid homage to this work in my title.

Article 2: Great Architecture

This is the Limantos Residence in Sao Paulo, designed by Fernanda Marques Arquietos Associados. Marques was commissioned to create a residence that functions as both a family home and an entertainment facility. I really like the design of this house mainly because of the large glass panels which integrate the outside environment and the interior, and allow plenty of natural light to flow through. The house thus forms a relationship with its surroundings. Despite the heavy emphasis on transparency, Marques manages a balance to achieve privacy, utilising the existing trees as coverage. Furthermore, I really like Marques' staircases, which are placed strategically to break the space in the room. Interestingly, Marques was greatly inspired by Mies van der Rohe, which is clearly evident through the open-plan structure of the residence and the strong presence of glass panels.

Article 3: What is Beautiful?

'permanent sunrise'
Alejandro Propato
Sculpture by the Sea 2014
Photo Janice Teng
One exhibition I love to visit is the annual Sculpture by the Sea held along the Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach coastal walk. This sculpture featured in 2014's exhibit, 'permanent sunrise', was created by the Argentinian artist, Alejandro Propato, which consisted of wires spanning across the shoreline of Tamarama Beach. I took this photo with my iPhone, but particularly chose this angle because I was intrigued by the tautness of the bands, which reminded me of muscles. In my opinion, I consider this beautiful, because of its aesthetic and the concept behind it. I admire the work's simplicity, yet ability to parody the notion of people waking early to "catch the sunrise".
